Who was Rev Sharpe?

The story of Sharpe's Ridge is linked to the construction of the Great North Road, also known as the Convict Trail. From 1826 to 1832, convicts worked in chain gangs to build the road, a laborious task involving hand-picked stones and challenging terrain.

Reverend Charles Sharpe, an Anglican minister who served the Lower Hawkesbury region from 1831 to 1837, is part of this history. His home, located near Walkers Beach on the present-day River Road, was once accessible only by foot. To reach it, one would have to leave the western side of Old Northern Road, descend the escarpment and trek through the bush to the river below. It was a difficult journey, especially in the heat of summer.

Legend has it that Reverend Sharpe received help from one of the road surveyors, who directed convict labour to construct a path down the escarpment to the reverend’s home. Although the records are unclear, the road was built and remains part of the landscape with a section running through the top of the Shape’s Ridge Retreat property.

Today, a preserved section of the Convict Trail can be explored. To visit, cross the Hawkesbury River at Wisemans Ferry, turn left onto Settlers Road, and park after 650 metres. Signs will direct you to the trail.
